THE VILLAGE OF SPELONCATO

Speloncato, an ancient prehistoric refuge

In line with the oldest villages in Corsica, we can name Speloncato, a village dating back to the Neolithic period overlooking the Reginu plain located in the beautiful Balagne region.

As you tour Corsica during your camping stay, you will appreciate its charm, its music and its beautiful buildings !

In Speloncato, we live to the rhythm of fountains and polyphonic songs. While heritage is at the center of residents’ concerns, a village memorial site creates the link between generations. They all have a passion for the conservation of heritage sites and the transmission of Corsican know-how.

Speloncato: The village of the ancestors

We can think that its name is not due to chance, coming from the word -caves- in Corsican “spelonche”, the village having been built on the caves by its ancestors from the Neolithic era. We also find several vestiges of this prehistoric period. The Speloncato village developed later, in the Bronze Age and in the 4th and 6th centuries, with settlements erected in lower areas during the Roman era.

There are many historic buildings to visit in the village: its baroque church, the ancient Roman baths, the ancient village of Giustiniani as well as two chapels.
At the top of the village, in the Cima district, you can enjoy a view of the entire region. A feudal castle was built here in the 10th century, which has unfortunately since been destroyed.
Towards the west, it is possible to see Petra Tafunata: the pierced rock, and see the sunset appear through the stone
