THE MELI WATERFALL

Méli waterfall – Vivario

In Central Corsica, between the villages of Vivario and Tattone, there is the start of a path to reach the Méli waterfall. In the hamlet of Canaglia, a sign “Refuge de l’Onda – Pastricciola” indicates the start of the hike.

It is advisable to park just before the hamlet, as it is easier.

Vivario is very easy to access if you are camping in Corte, in less than 30 minutes.

Much of the trail is shaded and it is well signposted. After the sign, you must locate the orange markings and follow them throughout the hike. It starts with a track which turns into a small path after 500 meters.

When you arrive at the fork, simply turn right towards Tolla. Hikers are asked to close the small barrier securely after their passage.

In a few minutes, you will reach the Manganello, a small river with transparent and crystal clear water.

Take the time to stop and enjoy the sounds of Corsican nature, between the gentle sound of the water flowing in these Manganellu Gorges, and those of the nearby forest.

Don’t hesitate to swim, there is something for everyone: the torrent will bring you water that is often fresh and invigorating at around 16°C, while those who are more chilly can take advantage of several basins which act as a natural swimming pool. Between the heat of the rock and the shallow depth, the heat is often gentler, sometimes with spectacular color gradients ranging from the blue of the water to the yellow reflections of the rock.

When you resume your walk following the path, you will most of the time follow this river, with sometimes a small detour into a forest with pure air and relaxing sounds.

It is an ideal walk on days when it is very hot, as it is mostly covered, while the water of the nearby Manganello brings you a very pleasant fresh air.

After an hour of easy walking with invigorating air, you arrive at the place where the Meli joins the Manganello, flowing into the waters with a beautiful waterfall.

The most courageous can reach the Bergerie de Tolla further in just 15 minutes, 1 km away (elevation difference of 73 m) by returning via the GR 20 junction.

This sheepfold sells local cheese and it is possible to eat there, an interesting solution if you want to discover the Meli Waterfall during a more complete hike.
